little lost sputnik

This fall, I'll be attending ICU in Japan as a year long exchange university student. Not only is it the first time ever visiting another country, but I'll be alone, and learning a new language. All that fun stuff. Oh and let's not forgot the hardships, I'll be blogging those too. Follow my tumblr, or not. This is for my friends and family to check in on my adventures so I don't spam facebook. じゃあ。。また、ね。

井の頭公園 is quite beautiful at night. I definitely recommend a stroll through the park in the dark.  While most of the sakura blossoms have fallen, the lakes and streams are awash with the petals.  Incredibly lovely sight.

I’m planning a pleasant backpacking trip, I’ll be alone but oh well. I kind of like it that way, it’ll force me to talk to locals and fellow travelers. I don’t think I’ve been speaking Japanese since the semester ended. :S I also forgot how smoothly planning goes once I overcome my laziness and procrastination habits.

So glad I’m finally doing this, because I almost considered skipping travels to spend time with someone but I snapped out of it and that’s just not me to do that.

Import food store is making me nostalgic. Oreos, Doritos, select cereals. <3 Too bad that shit costs an arm and a leg here.

random encounter

I was just talking with friends in a park, and a Japanese old man started talking to us.  He was quite nice, and wanted to buy us ice cream in the end! So random, but he really insisted on it. Like I said before, I live for random encounters. Anyways, what really struck a cord with me, was him saying in Japanese “Young people of Japan these days don’t have heart nor believe in the future of Japan.  I just want to say as an old Japanese man, I do have heart.  And I want to thank you for believing in Japan as well.”

I’m tired so I won’t go into it, but it made me think a lot about Japanese society.

annoying little things

It’s really annoying when I am somewhere with a Japanese friend and once I talk to the waitress in Japanese, the waitress will only look at the Japanese person and reconfirm everything I just said with her instead as if I don’t know the words I’m using.  ughh.  And it’s even more annoying when my friend uses the exact same phrasing I used because shit I did know what I was saying lady!!

That’s one of the reasons why it’s kind of hard to speak Japanese here.  Adults just always assume you don’t know.  That’s why you must circumvent this and talk to:

1. old people, they are just so cute and they will still talk Japanese with you because they probably don’t know English.  Also they always try to teach you new words.

2. young children, they just assume because you are in Japan you must be able to speak Japanese right?  And that is the kind of assumptions I approve of.

hmm

Sorry, I haven’t been blogging in awhile.  Winter semester has started :( Some of my international friends have gone home already.  It’s really sad, but now there are new places I’d like to visit in the future! I would like to visit and maintain the worthwhile friendships I’ve made here. :)

My friends have all gotten really lazy about going out and about Tokyo.  Some of them want to go home. :/ I’m like really?? I don’t think you’ve seen and learned everything about Japan in 6 months…

Anyways, I’ve become more ascertain with improving my Japanese this semester and interacting with Japanese people.  I think the Japanese students on campus are nice, but more on a superficial, “I don’t actually want to get to know you” nice.  So I’ve put up a profile on a language exchange website so I can meet Japanese people outside of school.  Of course I’ll be careful about it, I’ve had some friends that have used it too.  So yeah, hopefully that goes well. :D

financial situation

is stressing me out.  I need to budget big time.  plus side: getting skinnier from eating out less.
